The undisputed Queen of Disco in the campest, draggiest of forms, Sylvester James put the ‘Hi’ in NRG.
A troubled childhood saw him leaving home at 16 and it was Julia Morgan, his Grandmother (a Jazz Singer from the 20s & 30s) who pushed him into singing via Gospel. He was sadly lost to AIDS in the late 80s.
His relationship with record chiefs was known at times to be strained as he resisted their requests to ‘butch up’ his act, leading him to attend meetings in drag…
…Maybe some of us should follow his lead to spice things up at work from time to time!
