Greetings from Carnivalism brought three days of open-air dancing to The Three Horseshoes in Bradford on Avon, with Carnivalism, friends and special guests taking over the beer garden and heading into the night. Saturday was always intended to carry the full eclectic spirit of Carnivalism, and Dr M’s opening set established that mood from the start.

A Mambo Inn regular in the late 1980s, Dr M has been navigating the Black African diaspora since long before it had a name. His selections are rooted in African music, roots reggae, jazz, funk, electric blues and soul, backed by the kind of crate knowledge that only comes from actually being there.
The music travels widely within this niche. Axiom Funk’s psychedelic P-Funk interpretation of “If 6 Was 9” gives way to Burhan Öçal and Jamaaladeen Tacuma’s Turkish fusion, the deep Brazilian soul of Tim Maia and the unmistakable Afrobeat pulse of Fela Kuti. Alhaji Waziri Oshomah and Orchestra Makassy carry the set through highlife and soukous before Delroy Washington and Bunny Wailer bring conscious roots reggae into the final stretch.
